Example: a water utility with meters on LTE-M/NB-IoT and pumping stations on LTE. Readings and alarms go to billing and SCADA. An illustrative scenario, not a client reference.

Water

The water meter and the pumping station report to the utility. Not to the public network.

Remote reading of water meters, connectivity for pumping stations, treatment works, pressure sensors and leak sensors. A cabinet on the network does not get a public route.

Reading and site

Meter, pressure, leak, pump — one addressing plan, different rules.

A lean radio

NB-IoT and LTE-M for the meter, LTE for a controller that carries more than a pulse.

No local internet

Treatment does not get its own path outward.

What bounces off the edge

An outlying site often has no fiber. A SIM “with internet” solves connectivity and at the same time exposes the controller.

The sensor and the controller join the private APN. The utility control room reaches them through the tunnel. A leak and a pressure drop are alarms in your system, not an open port. Where coverage is missing we add a second network or Starlink — still to the same headquarters.

Security

  • The pumping-station controller has no public address.
  • A water meter does not see the treatment works if that traffic is cut.
  • The log stays with the utility SCADA.

Drinking water supply is a sector the directive names. Isolating sites and keeping a backup path support continuity. Classification and the audit stay with the security people.
